Thirty-five Belmont Old Boys and their guests were privileged to hear a brilliant talk by David Chaundler OBE on his experiences in the Falklands War. From finding himself chosen to replace the famous Colonel H Jones, to being parachuted into the South Atlantic and the subsequent action, David’s talk ranged from the incompetence of some administrators to the dreadful brutality of war.
It was fascinating to hear the inside story on so much that most of us had only read about in newspapers: the role of politicians and the military, and comparisons with current action in Afghanistan and Iraq. The mood ranged from highly amusing to completely heart-breaking. We were left with much to ponder on. |
